Pond pics July 2004

I thinned out the number of lily pads so the crown of the plant would get more sun. Hopefully I'll start getting more blooms out of the lilies.

Here is a close-up of my second bloom this year.

My fish decided to join in on the pictures.

I don't know what these frogs are, but I've got three of them:

Pond updated March 2004.

Due to a separation (tear in the joint) in my 20 mil liner, I got a nice Aquascape 45 mil fishsafe liner. I found out that I'm down to 26 fish (most likely due to some local hungry cats). I made the pond deeper (probably aboout 10" or so) and redid the edges so as to hide the liner better. Here are some new pictures:

Pond created March 2002.
400 gallon main pond, approximately 6' x 7' and 26" deep other than 2 plant shelves, one 14" and one 18".
20 gallon upper mini ponds/stream/waterfall.
4 eight-inch goldfish (called "Comets"), about 30 2-5" fish fry.

I have some plants I got from Lowe's, "yellow water lily", "soft rush", "water iris (rose queen)", "forget me not", "umbrella flat sedge", "caltha", "marginal iris", "Mare's tail", and "yellow iris". Some of these plants are in the mini-ponds and some in the pond itself. I also planted some Taro (elephant ears) in the pond and in the three mini-pools leading into the pond. I also have some water lettuce, pennywort, pickerel weed, and 2 Alba lilies.

Pond progress (November 30, 2002):

The pond is now "winterized". Only the irises remain above water in the pond. The rest of the plants died back due to some freezes we had. I kept the pots in the water. They should all come back in the spring. I am planning on keeping the filter and pump running all winter. The water temperature is now below 50 degrees so I have discontinued feeding the fish.

Pond progress (September 2, 2002):

I have a new pump now, a 700 GPH one from Supreme. The waterfall is quite impressive both in sound and in view. I love it! The elephant ears are getting blooms as well as the pickerel weed. Some silly caterpillars just about destroyed my pretty impatiens. The fish enjoyed each one of them as I hand-picked them off and threw them in the pond. The pond still has very clear water and the fish seem to be as happy as can be.

Pond progress (July 18, 2002):

Although the elephant ears on the left side of the pond were getting tall (over 5') and pretty, they were hiding the ponds too much so I uprooted them and planted some colorful annuals.

Our impatiens are doing great planted in the waterfall (left) and on the left side of the hill leading up to the waterfall.

For now, the water has no more free floating algae that turns the water a shade of green. The elephant ears have grown quite large (larger than I really wanted), as well as my 4 new Alba lilies. Here is a picture of my two youngest kids enjoying the pond and blowing bubbles.

Here is a picture of the waterfall. The water trickles down onto a feather rock before entering the pond..

Here is a picture of my 4 Comet Goldfish.
